The rejection letter felt heavy, like a brick in her hand. Sarah reread the polite phrases, the carefully chosen words that still managed to crush her. A sigh escaped her, a sound of defeated air. She dropped the letter onto the cluttered desk, the paper landing face down amongst a chaos of coffee-stained drafts. Her shoulders slumped, and the ache in her lower back throbbed. She hadn’t realized how much she’d leaned into the chair, until her posture corrected itself and the pain intensified. The apartment, usually a haven, now felt oppressive, the walls closing in on her.
